The Illusion of Time

For most of human history, time was considered an absolute, ticking steadily forward like a cosmic clock. Sir Isaac Newton formalized this view, describing time as a universal stage upon which the events of the universe played out.

But in 1905, Albert Einstein shattered this illusion with his Special Theory of Relativity. Einstein proved that time is not absolute. Instead, it is deeply woven into the fabric of space itself, creating a four-dimensional structure we now call spacetime.

The Block Universe

If time is relative to the observer's speed and gravitational field, the concept of a universal "now" ceases to exist. What is the present for you might be the past for an observer moving at a different velocity.

This leads physicists to the concept of the Block Universe: a perspective where the past, present, and future all exist simultaneously in a giant, unchanging four-dimensional block. We simply experience it slice by slice, constrained by our thermodynamic arrow of time.

Entropy and the Arrow of Time

If the fundamental laws of physics are time-symmetric (meaning they work the same forwards and backwards), why do we only remember the past and not the future? The answer lies in the Second Law of Thermodynamics: Entropy.

The universe began in a state of extremely low entropy (high order) at the Big Bang. As time progresses, entropy (disorder) increases. This transition from order to disorder is what gives time its perceived direction.
